2013 has certainly been the year for Country Music. The Billboard Music Awards more than proved that during the high-energy, superstar-filled show Sunday, May 19.
Country Music artists who won the prestigious BBMA award included Taylor Swift, taking home 8 out of 11 awards for which she was nominated, including honors for Artist of the Year, Top Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album and Top Country Artist. Also nominated in the Top Country Artist category were Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Hunter Hayes and Carrie Underwood. While Swift may have won the Top Country Song with “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” other Country Music hits of the year were well represented: Luke Bryan‘s “Drunk on You,” Eric Church‘s “Springsteen,” Florida Georgia Line‘s “Cruise” and Hunter Hayes‘ “Wanted.” Jason Aldean was also nominated for Top Male Artist alongside winner Justin Bieber, plus Drake, Flo Rida and Bruno Mars.
Country performances rocked the BBMAs, too, while several stars appeared as presenters. The night’s big winner Taylor Swift energized the audience with a colorful performance of “22,” originating backstage in the venue and making her way through the crowd to the stage during the song. Newcomer Kacey Musgraves gave a soulful performance of “Merry Go ‘Round” after being introduced by Top Country Song nominee Florida Georgia Line. Shania Twain presented Rap Artist of the Year, which went to Nicki Minaj. Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland introduced The Band Perry, who performed their brilliantly intense hit, “Better Dig Two.” The fiery star of ABC’s “Nashville,” Hayden Panettiere, introduced Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
Congratulations to all of the 2013 BBMA winners, nominees, performers and presenters who represent the excellence in the genre of Country Music. Learn more at http://www.billboard.com/bbma.
