PROFILE: The Band Perry

CMA Music Festival welcomed The Band Perry to the LP Field stage in 2010, when the group offered its rendition of the National Anthem before Friday night’s show.  This year, siblings Kimberly, Neil and Reid will rock the stadium with a full set.  And the group leads our 2011 series of artist profiles.

The Band Perry performs the National Anthem at the 2010 CMA Music Festival (6/11/10).

Forming TBP

With influences of equal part rock-and-roll and Country, and music in her blood, Kimberly Perry formed her first high school band at age 15.  While that band didn’t include her two younger brothers quite yet, it set in motion a career we fans are enjoying today.

As Kimberly worked to make music, she enlisted Reid (at the time 10) and Neil (8) for road duties.  It wasn’t long before the glamour of changing guitar strings and carrying instruments began to fade, so the brothers formed their own band to serve as an opening act for their big sis.

As each sibling worked to hone their craft and develop a style, each night they’d come home and sing harmonies to the Country songs they loved.  It seemed inevitable that the trio would perform together at some point.  They were just waiting for the stars to align.

In 2005, The Band Perry was officially brought together.  That same year, Coca-Cola Bottling Company asked TBP to open on the “New Faces of Country” tour.  After three years of touring, a chance meeting with longtime Garth Brooks manager Bob Doyle led to TBP creating music in Nashville.

Success to Date

The group’s self-titled debut album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart, and at No. 4 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart.  First single, “Hip To My Heart” cracked the top 20 and was followed by the No. 1 fan favorite, “If I Die Young,” which the group performed at the 2010 CMA Awards last November.  The Band Perry’s current single, “You Lie,” is climbing the charts now.

The Band Perry's self-titled CD debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart.

Host the Perfect Viewing Party

by BOB DOERSCHUK

Why spend the evening of Sept. 1 on your own? ABC can help make it a night to remember; all you need to do is invite a few friends over to watch “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock” and take these hints from Planit Nashville, the event planning and promotions company based in Music City, on how to make it a party to remember.

Décor
• Ask guests to dress in the fashion of their favorite artists. And since this is “Country’s Night to Rock,” layer your invitation with Country-inspired graphics, electric guitars and a little rock ‘n’ roll imagery to boot.

• Decorate your buffet table and gathering areas with pictures, CDs and any other items that say “Country” loud and clear.

• Go retro for your food and beverage centerpiece, with three different Western-style boots. Place a small vase inside the boot to fill with water. Add daisies, sunflowers or any flower of your choice.

• Use dollar frames to insert pictures of artists next to their song lyrics or classic quotes (i.e., “It takes a lot of money to look this cheap!” – Dolly Parton).

Food/Beverage
• Take classic down-home food and give it an upscale twist (i.e., pulled pork BBQ in a filo tart shell topped with a sprig of cilantro or smoked gouda cheese grits, served in shot glasses).

• Choose a signature drink, such as Lynchburg lemonade or whiskey sweet tea. Serve them in martini glasses with a lemon twist. Or how about these options, courtesy of 8 Lavender Lane Catering (www.8lavenderlane.com)?

Firefly Iced Tea
1-1/2 oz Firefly Iced Tea flavored vodka
½ oz Peach Schnapps
Cranberry Juice
Serve over ice w/ a twist of orange

Wild Wild West
1-1/2 oz Jack Daniel’s
1 oz Peach Schnapps
Cranberry

Be sure to offer festive non-alcoholic alternatives to the signature drinks – and encourage guests to drink responsibly and come with designated driver.

Games
• Choose two or three easy-to-learn line dances to teach during pre-show or commercial breaks. Draw two or three artist names out of a hat. When they perform, guests have to jump up and perform one of the line dances.

• Create a playlist to play “Name That Tune.” Give the winner a CD by one of their favorite artists or an iTunes gift card.

Party Favors
• Create a glitzy Country-rock themed backdrop and take digital pictures of guests in front of it. Print pictures on photo paper and insert in a magnetic picture frame (decorated with the date and party theme, if you’re industrious) and send it home with each guest.

Other
• Rent a big-screen TV for the backyard. (Ballpark estimated cost for 7.5 x 10 = $350)

• Rent a champagne fountain and run your specialty beverage through it for a bit more glam and wow factor ($50-$75), highboy tables ($10 each) and a few linens ($12-$14). Pick it up, set it up and plug it in!

• Call a caterer! It saves time and cost and is worth every penny on a weeknight. Have them drop food in disposables at your door – and you take all the credit!

ABC’s Approach to Web Videos for CMA Music Fest TV special

ABC Web Interviews Build Anticipation for “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock”

By Bob Doerschuk

With thousands of fans filling the streets of Downtown Nashville during CMA Music Festival, it might have been easy to miss one five-person crew threading through the crowd, hustling video gear to LP Field and back, packing and driving with it to homes and studios around town for interview segments, basically covering an enormous amount of ground and then coming back to do it again the next day.

Their assignment was to repeat what they’d done in recent CMA Fests: Capture the energy, excitement, drama, humor and exhilaration of these four days, and then whittle the results down to a series of short reports or vignettes. Beginning Aug. 9, these have been posted on ABC.com, as well as other Disney Web sites, Hulu.com, YouTube.com and other destinations, to maximize awareness among visitors and motivate them to tune to ABC on Sept. 1, 8/7c, for “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock.”

David Beebe, Director of Video Production, Disney/ABC Television Video Group, has overseen every one of these online promotions since they began in 2007.

Did you approach shooting for the Web differently at this year’s Festival than in previous years?

Beebe Rather than shoot very structured, sit-down EPK-style interviews, we used the relationships we’ve grown over these four years to shoot more behind the scenes, where there weren’t any other crews. We shot a lot on the artists’ tour buses or even in their homes. Each interview is a minute to two minutes and focused on a single artist, from newcomers to bigger names. We went to a lot of fan club parties with artists. We talked with Martina McBride at her Blackbird Studio. We did a lot with Darius Rucker. We have Jake Owen and Luke Bryan before a performance, talking. Some artists put together skits – for instance, Blake Shelton bringing his dogs over to Kellie Pickler’s bus and asking her to watch them while he goes onstage.

Were these vignettes scripted?

Beebe We didn’t want to give people scripts. We just set up an hour before shooting and said, “Hey, we’d like to shoot something fun, that people will want to share virally.” A lot of it was done on the fly.

How much advance work was required?

Beebe There wasn’t a lot of pre-production. We started planning our coverage about a month before the Festival, setting things up so that we could get what no one else was getting.

Do we see your interviewers on camera?

Beebe They’re off camera, so there’s no one to distract. It’s all about the artist this year. We cover all the events, we get a lot of stuff on camera that we can put together – but all of it is focused on that artist.

What else is different this year?

Beebe Rather than keep it exclusive to ABC.com and our partners, we’re handing out the footage everywhere we can. That’s our game plan: Shoot everywhere and share it wide.

CMA Music Festival Kick-Off Parade: New Route, Debut Attractions, More Stars and Plenty of Excitement

For five years, fans who didn’t want to wait for Thursday morning have begun the CMA Music Festival party one day early. The Festival’s Kick-Off Parade does that and more, with veteran and fast-rising new artists riding classic Chevy vehicles through the streets of Downtown Nashville.

This year, though, visitors can enjoy fresh perspectives on the action along a new route. From the corner of Second Avenue North and Church Street, the all-star procession winds two blocks past the restaurants and businesses that line Second Avenue and then turns right. From there, it rolls down Broadway toward an afternoon of great – and FREE – music at the Chevy Music Stage on the Bridgestone Arena Plaza.

Following right behind a huge inflatable musical note, signifying the start of the Parade, Country Music Hall of Fame member Brenda Lee leads the way as Grand Marshal. Dozens of artists follow in an array of vehicles supplied by Carl Black Chevrolet and members of the Nashville Corvette Club. The lineup this year includes Lynn Anderson, Katie Armiger, Rodney Atkins, The Band Perry, Bo Bice, Ash Bowers, Carter Twins, Jeff Cook, Diana DeGarmo, Fast Ryde, Colt Ford, Brantley Gilbert, Gloriana, Josh Gracin, The Grascals, The Harters, Buddy Jewell, KingBilly, Jesse Lee, LoCash Cowboys, Lonestar, Jerrod Niemann, James Otto, Danielle Peck, Point of Grace, Marty Raybon, Pam Tillis, Trent Tomlinson and Chuck Wicks (artists participating subject to change).

Many favorites from past parades are back this year, from the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to the Nashville Sounds, Nashville Predators and Tennessee Titans mascots. But new participants will join the fun too, among them the Pryme Tyme Athletics cheerleaders, young members of the Nashville Children’s Theater, the Color Guard and Honor Guard from the Metro Nashville Police Department and more. In total, there are approximately 20 more units in this year’s Parade than in 2009, according Parade Coordinator Dell Courtney.

“Part of our task was to increase the efficiency of how the parade moved down the street, by making sure everything was in the right order and to make sure our volunteers are properly informed of what needed to be done and when it needed to be done,” said Courtney, who owns VisionWorks, a Louisville-based company that specializes in planning major events such as parades, festivals and trade shows. “Then we added elements to make the parade a little different – for example, we have a very strong patriotic element this year – without taking away from what the fans come to see, the artists in Corvettes and Silverado trucks.”

The Chevy vehicles, the Big Kenny, Luke Bryan and Wrangler/George Strait trucks, the Music City Drum & Bugle Corps, the rowdy Nashville Rollergirls and ever-civilized Geico Gecko and all their parade-mates hit the road at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, June 9.

  • Three survival items to have – your ID, a Four-day ticket or daily pass (Sat-Sun) to get inside, and cash/credit card
  • A bonus survival item to bring with you is a good attitude
  • Don’t ever run, push or shove – both for safety reasons and out of courtesy to your fellow fans!
  • Provide only one item for an artist sign. (The Hall is a greed-free zone, Chuck!)

The Biggest Question…and the Answer!

Q: How do I obtain autographs?

A: Most of the Exhibit Booths use a ticket system.  Note: Not ALL exhibitors use this system, but most do.  As in life, there are few absolutes.

With that in mind, here are a few helpful hints to help you meet some of your favorite stars!

  1. Find out the Artist Signing Schedule in advance by texting SCHEDULE to 66937.  This will ensure you’re on the text distribution list to get Hall updates.  Note that all details, including artists and signing times are always subject to change.
  2. Determine which artists you want to meet each day and the location of the booth they are signing in on the Fan Fair® Hall Map.
  3. The Fan Fair® Hall is located in the Nashville Convention Center.  The building opens at 8:30 a.m. each day.  Some fans choose to line up outside the building much earlier than that to get an autograph.  Building admittance is on a first-come, first-served basis.
  4. Once building doors open at 8:30 a.m., fans are lined up inside the building to enter the Fan Fair® Hall (bottom level of Nashville Convention Center).
  5. The doors to the actual Fan Fair® Hall open at 10:00 a.m.  Fans are REALLY excited to get an autograph.  However, running, pushing and shoving is not permitted.  Please respect your fellow attendees.
  6. Check with the Exhibit Booths to confirm signing times and to see if there are any specific instructions.  Unless otherwise communicated, tickets to artist signings are given out on the day Artist is signing when doors open.  (Again, there are no absolutes!)
  7. Most exhibitors operate using a ticket system to meet artists.  A ticket is a GUARANTEE that you will meet the artist – as long as you show up during the specified signing time.  A limited number of tickets are handed out at each booth, so you need to create a plan in order to collect tickets at multiple booths.
  8. Only one ticket will be given out to a person at a booth.  Fans may not collect additional tickets for companions.
  9. Grab & Go – Fans can literally “grab” a ticket to see their Artist of choosing and “Go” do something else.  What a great thing!  There are so many things to do and see in all parts of the CMA Music Festival.  A ticket provides fans freedom to experience other parts of Music Fest while waiting for your artist to arrive.
  10. Keep in mind that artist schedules are quite full during CMA Music Festival week and thus some artists do not have a long period of time available for their autograph times.  Unfortunately not everyone will get an autograph.  But still make plans to come by the exhibit to wave to your favorite artists and take their picture.  You’ll have a great time no matter what!
  11. If all the tickets are given out before you arrive at the booth, you may have an option to get into a Hopeful Line.  Fans are welcome to stand in the Hopeful Line for their favorite artist; however note there is NEVER a guarantee that folks in these lines will get to the meet the artist.

5 More Reasons to Hit the Hall:

  1. There are lots of great entertaining booths with activities and free giveaways.
  2. Get a history lesson with great signs that tell the Fan Fair story!
  3. Check out the Durango® Acoustic Corner performance venue, broadcast by WSM-AM, with live shows daily and Q&A sessions with stars!
  4. New in 2010: The Country Network presents the CMA Skype Lounge! Not all artists are in Nashville for the Fest, but the CMA Skype Lounge lets fans and artists connect in a whole new way.  Learn more and get tickets at The Country Network Booth (#235).
  5. It’s air conditioned.  Trust us: it’s reason enough! J

Knowing these great things will definitely enhance your Fan Fair® Hall experience – and your CMA Music Festival vacation overall.  Have any other questions?  Any vets out there want to share some helpful hints?

We can’t wait to see y’all!  Only 15 more days!

TIP: Get Mere Feet Away From Your Favorite Stars!

Want to be stagefront for Lady A?  Get close for Aldean’s performance?  Snap an ultra-good shot of Mr. McGraw, or see Martina’s tonsils while she belts it out?  With the CMA Music Festival four-day ticket, you can do it all.  You see, CMA Music Festival prides itself on bringing the incredible artists and the super-dedicated fans together.  A cool way the Fest closes the gap between performer and audience are the Fan Photo Lines at LP Field and Riverfront Park.  Festival newcomers may be asking themselves just what the Fan Photo Lines are, while the Fest vets know what a cool and unique element it is.

The Fan Photo Lines are the stream of fans that run directly in front of the stages at LP Field (yes, all the way down front!) and also at Riverfront Park during the daytime.  The basic idea is that no matter where you’re seated in a nearly 70,000-seat stadium, if you’re a four-day ticket holder, you can get up close to your favorite stars as they light up the night or heat up the day!

How it works at the Riverfront Park Stage:

  • Know the show lineup!  For the lineup, you can check the Pocket Guide you get at Registration, the forthcoming CMA Fest iPhone app or the forthcoming custom schedule (more on these items soon!) you can build at CMAfest.com.
  • When your favorite stars are playing, make your way to the left side of the stage – camera in tow…
  • Security will check passes and allow all four-day ticket holders admittance to the line.
  • Snap your photos, and make that star connection!
  • Repeat as desired.

The cool kids know all about the Fan Photo Line at Riverfront Park!

How it works at LP Field:

  • Again, know when your favorites are coming up by checking the Pocket Guide, the iPhone app or your custom schedule from CMAfest.com…
  • When you ID which artists you want to photograph from the Photo Line, make your way to the Concourse at LP Field.
  • Line formation starts in the North End Zone (behind the stage), and there will be separate lines for each performer.
  • Staff will be on site to cue the line to start.  You’ll be directed down the steps of the LP Field Lower Bowl (East side, section 110) to pass in front of the stage to get your photo!
  • Upon passing, you will be directed up the stairs at section 137 (West side), back to the Concourse. (Four-day ticket holders with Gold Circle and Field-level seating may be directed back onto the field toward their seat.)
  • Repeat as desired.

You’ll pass right in front of the stage...

...like the people here rocking out to Dierks, who must be singing "Come a Little Closer."

 ADA Access at LP Field:

  • Four-day ticket holders in field-level ADA sections WILL be able to enter the Fan Photo Line from the field. Go to stage left (the right side of the stage as you face the stage).  Confused yet?  Well, you’ll see the traffic flow in front of the stage.  Go to the side where the traffic starts  to pass in front of the stage… :-)
  • Four-day ticket holders in other ADA seating levels will have access to an elevator to take them onto the field to enter the Fan Photo Line.  Proceed to the ramp near gates 2-3 (behind section 104) to access the elevator.

Things to note:

  • In order to accommodate all the fans who want to participate in the Fan Photo Line, the line must be kept moving.  Staff will be present to help direct the traffic flow.
  • With the exception of ADA seat ticket holders, all four-day ticket holders must access the Fan Photo Line by lining up on the Concourse Level.
  • Fan Photo Line admittance is reserved exclusively for four-day ticket holders only.  Single-night concert ticket holders will not be admitted.
  • Above all else BE SAFE and HAVE FUN!

You never know what artist will drop in. What up, Keith?!

Don’t need no five-star reservations to get close to Darius…just four-day seats!

Whether your four-day ticket is on the field, in the lower bowl, club-level or upper-level, you can have that FRONT-ROW EXPERIENCE in the Fan Photo Line.  Just another way CMA Music Festival is different from the rest!
