Twas The Night of Country Christmas

Twas the night of CMA Christmas, when all through the lands
Country fans were abuzz to watch their favorite bands.
Their TVs were set, they had to see it all
From artists, to muppets, and trees oh-so-tall.

xmas11_pickler_3356

They nestled on their couches, ready to sing along,
“Jingle Bells,” “White Christmas,” every last song.
With Jennifer at the helm for the second year in a row,
15 artists are here to put on a (GREAT) show.

When 9 o’clock came with Christmas carols abound,
Kids knew to be quiet and not make a sound.
Away to the couches they flew awfully fast,
Cuddled up with their blankets to watch our Christmas show cast.

Miss Piggy the Muppet takes the stage with Vince Gill,
To sing of the weather, the snow, and the chill.
But Amy Grant is here too! To sing with her boo!
They promise to give a great performance for you.

xmas11_nettles_7186_21835

The talent on stage is truly incredible,
Miss Piggy’s still complaining about Brad Paisley calling her edible.
Sugarland, sugarplums, fireside chats,
Not one but two songs by the famous Rascal Flatts.

And then from the crowd we hear an applause,
As Brad and Brian boogie woogie like Santa Claus.
Then Keith serenades us, the best from down under,
Lauren and Kellie from Idol, they fill us with wonder.

Now Scotty!, now Darius!, now, Little Big Town!
On Faith!, On Martina, oh such a beautiful gown!
To the front of the stage! To the front of it all!
Now sing away! Sing away! Sing away ya’ll!

We hope you enjoy watching our show,
Its a pleasure to have you, just so you know.
Enjoy the holidays, we hope they are swell,
We here at CMA Christmas wish you all well!!!

The 2011 CMA Awards

Featured

Carrie and Brad have some fun with Miss Piggy.

The 2011 CMA Awards aired Wednesday night LIVE on ABC from the Country Music capital of the world. The CMA Awards are a long-lasting tradition to honor and celebrate the men and women who enhance the lives of millions of global fans. These artists yield the songs that become the soundtracks to our lives and the anthems we pass along, swearing our musical taste is superior to those of subsequent generations. With catching harmonies, heart pounding bass lines, electrifying drum solos, and synergistic musical accompaniments, upholding the value and virtue of Country Music is always the common goal.

“The 45th Annual CMA Awards” was a showcase of musical talent and countless industry feats. From the exhilarating pyrotechnics of Miranda Lambert’s “Baggage Claim” to the breathtaking acrobatics of Sara Evans’ “A Little Bit Stronger,” the performances further demonstrated the power of Country Music and the propensity of its stars go above and beyond in support of the genre…and each other.

Little Big Town pose with music icon Lionel Richie on the Macy's Walk of Stars Red Carpet.

Sure there were actual families among the night’s lineup including sibling trio The Band Perry (who earned Single of the Year for “If I Die Young” and New Artist of the Year, plus Song of the Year for writer Kimberly Perry), and a slew of industry marriages like Tim McGraw and performer Faith Hill, reigning Male/Female Vocalist victors Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, and the couples of Thompson Square, Steel Magnolia, and Karen Fairchild and Jimi Westbrook of Little Big Town. But performances like Jimmy Webb, Vince Gill, Keith Urban, and Brad Paisley’s touching tribute to Country Music icon Glen Campbell, who silently mouthed the words from the crowd, left fans and artists alike with a true understanding of the indelible camaraderie permeating the Country community. Backstage, that sense of southern hospitality even superseded genre distinctions as Vocal Group of the Year Lady Antebellum raved about rocker Grace Potter and her undeniable talent as she performed “You and Tequila” with four-time Entertainer of the Year Kenny Chesney. Chesney himself echoed this reverence and explained, “’You and Tequila’ is such a tortured soul song about being addicted to a person who is not very good for you…The chemistry [between him and Potter] was evident from the moment we walked into the studio.”

Jason Aldean accepts Album of the Year honors for MY KINDA PARTY.

It’s this sense of amity that allows four-time hosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood to poke fun at fellow industry members, even inciting Hank Williams Jr. to join them on stage after Paisley lampooned  controversies surrounding the Country legend. Barbie Doll effigies of Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, a surprise guest appearance Little Jimmy Dickens as a less-than-accurate depiction of sensation Justin Bieber, and some recent social commentary by comedic actor Eric Stonestreet further illustrate Carrie’s claim that Brad is “the single biggest and most shameless wiseacre on either side of the Mason-Dixon line.” With Awards doled out, entertainment appetites satiated, and an impossibly stronger appreciation for Country Music, we congratulate and thank the nominees, performers, presenters, volunteers, technicians, media members, fans, and viewers for supporting Country Music’s Biggest Night!

CMA Awards Artist Spotlight: KEITH URBAN

Keith Urban performs "Put You In A Song" at the 44th Annual CMA Awards in 2010.

New Zealand-born Australian Keith Urban is no stranger to receiving prestigious honors from some of the most prominent music institutions, but that didn’t lessen his excitement upon hearing “The 45th Annual CMA Awards” nominations last week. With five well-deserved CMA Award wins already under his belt — including the Country Music industry’s top prize, CMA Entertainer of the Year, in 2005 – Urban received two nods in 2011: Male Vocalist of the Year and, once more, Entertainer of the Year. The ever grateful musician tweeted:

@KeithUrban: Crazy cool CMA noms this morning!!!! It blows my mind how sweet they are when we get them. I’m euphoric and moved!!! Thank you. Thank you.”

He shares the honors with fellow industry titans Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton and Taylor Swift.

More about Keith Urban

Urban has continually developed his unique brand of Country-rock since he began guitar lessons at just six years old. Before moving to Nashville in 1992, Urban helped to revolutionize Country Music in Australia, scoring several number one hits which revealed his novel blend of Country and rock-and-roll inspired sounds. Urban’s early aspirations to emulate Country idols like Glen Campbell, Dolly Parton, Don Williams, and Jimmy Webb paired with an intense admiration for British rocker Mark Knopfler of the Dire Straits helps shed some light on what makes him stand out from so many other talented musicians. Underpinning Urban’s Country twang lays an inextricable passion for rock-and-roll. Urban’s ability to successfully fuse these two musical genres has led to numerous accolades including Grammys, CMA Awards, People’s Choice Awards, and Australia’s prestigious Aria Award to name a few. To date, Urban has amassed nearly a dozen No. 1 singles in the US.

Urban’s climb to the top has not come without its trials and tribulations. However, Urban has not allowed a highly publicized private life interfere with his creative ambition and passion for music. Not even the destruction of his prized personal guitar collection in the May 2010 middle Tennessee flood could deter him from recording his sixth studio album Get Closer. Released in November 2010, Get Closer has since yielded three hit singles “Put You in a Song,” “Without You,” and “Long Hot Summer.” The album debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chat. Get Closer is a testament to Urban’s own life as he continues to openly explore his own experiences with love and relationships. Urban challenged himself and boldly confronted his strengths and weaknesses in this album.

“I loved making this record. I felt a tremendous sense of balance in my life, as a husband and a father and a musician who gets to go and try to capture all that and harness it and create something.”

CMA Awards Artist Spotlight: THE BAND PERRY

In 2010, The Band Perry made their CMA Awards debut, performing "If I Die Young," which is nominated in 2010 for Single and Song of the Year.

On September 6th 2011, three Country newcomers from The Band Perry joined music comrade Jake Owen on ABC’s “Good Morning America” to announce the final nominees for “The 45th Annual CMA Awards.” If revealing the finalists was not honor enough, The Band Perry walked away with four nominations, while songwriter Kimberly Perry earned a fifth for penning the smash hit “If I Die Young.” The acknowledgement comes a short two years after the release of the group’s debut single in August 2009. The nominations (New Artist of the Year; Vocal Group of the Year; and three nominations for the smash hit “If I Die Young” in the categories of Single, Song, and Music Video of the Year) mark the beginning of a very promising career for the trio of siblings. In response to their nominations:

“We are thrilled and humbled to have received these nominations and even more so to be able to play a role in sharing the good news of nominations for our peers on ‘Good Morning America.’ Being a part of the Country Music community is like having a very large extended family and it means the world to us.”

More about The Band Perry

Growing up, the trio found themselves naturally gravitating towards each other to share musical insight, write, and play. While strong musical pedigree surely pervades this gifted family, Kimberly, Reid, and Neil Perry each bring their own unique knack to the group as well. Kimberly, the eldest, specializes in lead vocals, guitar, and piano; Reid, the middle, plays the bass guitar and sings background vocals; and Neil, the youngest, incorporates mandolin, drums, accordion, and vocals into the trio’s synergistic sound.

In 2005, Kimberly, Reid, and Neil joined forces and officially became The Band Perry. Soon after, the Coca-Cola Bottling Company invited the group to open the “New Faces of Country” tour that year.  In 2008, the Perry family moved to Nashville and since then, the siblings have taken the Country scene by storm.

Upon its release in October 2010, The Band Perry’s self-titled album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling nearly 53,000 copies in its first week. The album features the No.1 hit single “If I Die Young,” which went double-Platinum and earned the group nearly as many awards nominations as it did airplay. Two additional singles off the album, “You Lie” and “All Your Life” have further proven the talent inherent in this musical threesome.

In August 2011, The Band Perry set off on a 75-date tour that includes its own headlining shows as well as support dates for Keith Urban and Reba. So just how popular is this up-and-coming group? Their Nashville show, slated for February 2012 at the Ryman Auditorium, sold out in less than 20 minutes. However, even in the midst of tremendous career highs, The Band Perry is first and foremost a family. Says Reid of his relationship with Kimberly and Neil: “Blood runs thick. The music business can be hard, but the three of us are committed to not only our lives in music, but to living them together.”

CMA Awards Artist Spotlight: BLAKE SHELTON

Blake claims his first CMA Male Vocalist of the Year trophy in 2010.

Five nominations for “The 45th CMA Awards” (Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 8|7c on ABC) is par for the course for megastar Blake Shelton who is riding a wave of success…and ringing the virtues of Country Music along the way. The reigning CMA Male Vocalist of the Year is nominated for the honor again in 2011, while also securing nods for Album of the Year (All About Tonight), Single and Music Video (both for “Honey Bee”), and his first-ever nomination for Entertainer of the Year, where he’s acknowledged along with fellow top nominees Jason Aldean, Brad Paisley and Taylor Swift, plus Keith Urban.

More about Blake Shelton

No one can argue that 2011 has been a golden year for Blake Shelton. Not only did he release one of the year’s most highly anticipated Country albums (Red River Blue) and serve up some good old southern charm as a coach on NBC’s hit show “The Voice,” but he also wed his longtime companion, the radiant reigning CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Miranda Lambert.

A consistent Country force with hits including “Austin,” “The Baby,” “Some Beach” and “Home,” Shelton earned some long overdue exposure in 2011 with the success of “The Voice” and the arrival of his sixth full-length studio album. Released July 12, Red River Blue sold more than 116,000 units its first week, placing it at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums and Top Country Albums charts.  The record accelerated out of the gate on the strength of fan and radio response to first single “Honey Bee,” his ninth No. 1 and newly-CMA nominated. The album’s second single, “God Gave Me You,” is a powerful tribute to one’s better half. The poignant hit is already Top 15 and climbing.

As a coach on “The Voice” alongside Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine, Shelton won the hearts of contestants and viewers alike with his warm charisma and playful personality. His team succeeded throughout the inaugural season, and his protegee Dia Frampton placed 2nd in the competition. Proving himself as a loyal and compassionate mentor, a visibly-moved Shelton proclaimed Frampton as “family” to him after watching her duet performance of “The House That Built Me” with new-wife Lambert, whom he wed in a ceremony in May in Texas.

Blake and Trace perform "Hillbilly Bone" at the 2011 CMA Music Festival in Nashville.

Shelton performed at the 2011 CMA Music Festival in June, where he brought the sold-0ut stadium crowd to its feet by welcoming Trace Adkins for the duo’s 2010 Musical Event of the Year “Hillbilly Bone” and by offering a medley of cover tunes that included Wild Cherry‘s “Play That Funky Music,” the J. Geils Band‘s“Centerfold” and Bobby Brown‘s “My Prerogative.” Shelton’s currently touring throughout the U.S. through October, and he is signed to a second season of “The Voice,” set to premiere in January 2012.

PROFILE: The Band Perry

CMA Music Festival welcomed The Band Perry to the LP Field stage in 2010, when the group offered its rendition of the National Anthem before Friday night’s show.  This year, siblings Kimberly, Neil and Reid will rock the stadium with a full set.  And the group leads our 2011 series of artist profiles.

The Band Perry performs the National Anthem at the 2010 CMA Music Festival (6/11/10).

Forming TBP

With influences of equal part rock-and-roll and Country, and music in her blood, Kimberly Perry formed her first high school band at age 15.  While that band didn’t include her two younger brothers quite yet, it set in motion a career we fans are enjoying today.

As Kimberly worked to make music, she enlisted Reid (at the time 10) and Neil (8) for road duties.  It wasn’t long before the glamour of changing guitar strings and carrying instruments began to fade, so the brothers formed their own band to serve as an opening act for their big sis.

As each sibling worked to hone their craft and develop a style, each night they’d come home and sing harmonies to the Country songs they loved.  It seemed inevitable that the trio would perform together at some point.  They were just waiting for the stars to align.

In 2005, The Band Perry was officially brought together.  That same year, Coca-Cola Bottling Company asked TBP to open on the “New Faces of Country” tour.  After three years of touring, a chance meeting with longtime Garth Brooks manager Bob Doyle led to TBP creating music in Nashville.

Success to Date

The group’s self-titled debut album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart, and at No. 4 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart.  First single, “Hip To My Heart” cracked the top 20 and was followed by the No. 1 fan favorite, “If I Die Young,” which the group performed at the 2010 CMA Awards last November.  The Band Perry’s current single, “You Lie,” is climbing the charts now.

The Band Perry's self-titled CD debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart.

Get tickets for the 2011 CMA Music Festival now!  Priced from only $115 ($28.75 per day), tickets can be ordered at Ticketmaster.com, or by calling 1-800-CMA-FEST (262-3378) or 1-800-745-3000.  In addition to The Band Perry, stars already announced include Trace Adkins, Jason Aldean, Sheryl Crow, Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Rascal Flatts, 2011 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Reba, Darius Rucker, Blake Shelton and Keith Urban.  Many more will be announced SOON!

An Unexpected Addition Weds Marriage and Music at LP Field

(contributed by Lindsey Bynum)

The sense that anything can happen during CMA Music Festival was confirmed at LP Field on Friday night, June 11, thanks to a Nashville couple that found time between sets to get married onstage.

John and Casey Feldman tied the knot before thousands of cheering onlookers. Unexpected as stadium nuptials might seem, the groom felt it was a completely natural venue. “I work on the stage crew so I got to get married at work,” he noted.

Earlier, following The Band Perry’s rendition of the national anthem, the real party got started with Julianne Hough. She yelled out to fans, “I know you all know the next one so sing along,” followed by a performance of her hit song “That Song in My Head.”

A deep, soulful voice rumbled through the stadium, jolting the crowd from their seats to see Josh Turner. “I’m extremely grateful for you fans out there,” says Turner. “Thank you for traveling all those miles.”  Lights went dark as sounds of a train echoed throughout and Turner sang a fan favorite, “Long Black Train.” Audience members formed their own train, which wound throughout the stadium field. To end his set and kick off his current hit single, Turner only had to ask a simple question: “Why don’t we just dance?”

Kim Griffin, 38, from Albany, Ga., said, “I’ve been coming here for the past eight years and drove seven hours to come to CMA Fest. I came here to see Miranda Lambert’s performance. I can’t wait!”

Griffin got her wish. Lambert opened powerfully with “Famous in a Small Town”. Afterwards, she shared a personal recollection with the audience, saying “I remember exactly where I was sitting when I came to CMA Fest. I’m glad to be a part of this” as she points way up to the very top of the stadium.

After almost two hours of great performances, the audience was nowhere near close to stopping this amazing night. Keith Urban was next in line, and fans couldn’t stay in their seats.

Kristin Poole and Holly Watson, both 18 and from Bel Air, Md., drove all the way to Nashville to see Urban. “Instead of going to the beach like everyone else does, we came to CMA Fest for our senior trip. We’re so excited to see Keith Urban,”  Said Poole, who jokingly added, “Keith is my husband so I had to be here for his concert!”

Poole and Watson were not disappointed. Keith Urban stepped out with an all-star band, a three-voice chorus that included Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Roads of Little Big Town and Sarah Buxton, and a mind-blowing performance. Urban sang hit songs “Kiss a Girl”, “Days Go By” and “Sweet Thing”  before closing with an unbelievable cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends”.

“Even though we don’t know each other’s names and faces, everyone is helping each other out” said Urban, tying the message of his finale with the spirit exhibited by residents of Nashville working together to overcome flood damage.

The emcee for the evening, GAC and Sirius Satellite Radio personality Storme Warren, introduced Reba McEntire. She bonded especially with women in the crowd as she prefaced “I Want a Cowboy” with the line, “I’ll bet I’m not the only female who’s fantasized about a good-looking cowboy.” The crowd responded warmly as she delivered an entertaining set that culminated with her hit, “Fancy.”

Kid Rock’s closing set began with a huge ovation, to which the charismatic superstar announced, “Got a few minutes to get this done, so let’s get started!” By the time the night wrapped up at 12:45 with his performance of “Cowboy,”  his fans were primed to echo his last words on the LP Field stage: “People all over the world, I love you!”
